Our thanks to Phil Wade and his nephew, Terry Clark, for insisting that we put together some information about Rena and the serious illness she is now fighting here in Antigua. We will try to keep you up to date with her news and progress.

____________________________

On 14 May, Rena underwent abdominal surgery to remove a malignant tumour that was blocking her colon. The lymph glands in the area were also affected and the operation confirmed the suspicion that she had cancer secondaries in her liver.

Dr Kelvin Charles operated on her, with Nick Fuller assisting, in a three hour operation, finishing at 1.30am here at the Adelin Clinic in Antigua. The operation was a great success and she has recovered from it very well.

But then a crippling blow; at 1am on Monday 18 May, Rena suffered a stroke that has left her pretty much paralysed on her left side. Perhaps, her feisty spirit had her dancing just too energetically to the ‘concert’ blasting away a few hundred yards away from the hospital! Or, more realistically, she found it just as infuriating as I did!

Now she is home, or rather back to the house we are renting in Piccadilly, while we finish the rebuilding of ‘Nightingale’, her lovely house up the hill from the Antigua Sails loft. Progress on the redevelopment is good and we hope to be back in the house again within the next two months.

Rena first started feeling a bit under the weather in April. At the time, friends here were suffering from dengue fever and imported viruses, and with her low grade and intermittent fever, we rather thought this was just another one of those bugs. But, by the middle of the month she was cancelling out of her twice weekly tennis games.

Then, at the end April, we were having chest X-rays, and CT scans. And, by the end of the first week in May, after follow-up MRI’s, we knew that she had suffered a number of infarctions in the brain and had very suspicious lesions in her liver. The radiographer reckoned these were metastases, or secondaries, from a primary cancer elsewhere. The problem was where. We knew the lungs were clear and she had had a colonoscopy 7 months before, so that seemed to leave the stomach as the most likely source of the primary. But by the start of the following week, 11 May, she was feeling very poorly indeed and our dear friends who operate the ABSAR ambulance whisked her into the Adelin Medical centre for more evaluation. On Wednesday, she had a gastroscopy to check her tummy – clear, no problem. But she was by now vomiting and it didn’t smell good – sure sign that something was blocking up her gut. BUPA were by now organised with an air ambulance arriving on Friday morning. But this was going to be too late, for it became obvious in the course of Thursday 14th, that we had to go for immediate emergency surgery to find out what was happening.

She went into theatre and at about midnight, the surgeon removed a large malignant tumour from the top end of the colon, presumably just a bit too far up for the colonoscopy to have identified it. He also found that the lymph glands in the area had been affected and confirmed that in his view the lesions in the liver were indeed cancerous secondaries.

Rena recovered well from the surgery, and the lengthy scar on her tummy is one of her prettiest! I don’t go in for kissing men, but I felt like it at 1.30 in the morning when I saw Dr Charles after the operation.

I should also say how grateful we are to the lovely people who rallied around at midnight to get out of their beds and bunks to slog in to town to give blood for Rena – of course she has an interesting blood group. Thank you again, Sandy, Jane, Nettie and Xander.

__________________________

The stroke, 48 hours later was a cruel blow. Rena was left with a paralysed left side. Since then she has recovered pretty well. Her speech is much better now and we are seeing the first signs of voluntary movement. But she still has problems sitting up for any length of time – probably because the muscles on one side of the spine are having to do all the work.

_______________________

It would be invidious to single out any one person from all our friends in Antigua who have provided so much help and support during Rena’s hospitalisation. But we absolutely have to record our heartfelt thanks to Sandy Burridge who managed to keep Graham and I fed in fine fashion throughout our 24hr vigils at the hospital. Without her – I would be a lot thinner! Also to Ann Ayres, a friend for so many years, who came in to the hospital many times to give me a chance to get home and ‘re-group’ for a while during the day.

______________________

In the meanwhile, we are now pretty well organised in our ‘rental’. ABSAR (Antigua and Barbuda Search and Rescue) once again came to our aid and transported Rena back to Piccadilly from the Adelin medical centre. The Hospice, in the person of Agnes Meeker, got us supplied with a hospital bed, commodes, walking frame and good advice. To those yachtsmen who have supported Rena’s charity work over the years with donations of unwanted clothing and ‘stuff’, – thank you, for the hospice has figured high among the charities Rena has helped with your generosity. PLEASE KEEP IT COMING NEXT SEASON.

__________________________

On our return to Piccadilly, Eggie Van der Poole joined us as our ‘nurse in charge’. She is with us every morning, organises our schedule of trained carers and provides all the day to day medical advice and support we need. We also have a physiotherapist who ‘beats Rena up’ five or six days a week!

Rena is finding her progress very frustrating – particularly in overcoming the effects of the stroke. Worst of all, she no longer enjoys her champagne! But while progress may be slow, she can do a lot more than she could when she first arrived home and continues to do well. Our big drive now is to build up her weight in order that she can cope with the next phase of her treatment.

______________________________

Not surprisingly, Rena has had many, many messages of love and encouragement from all over the world. I must also say that Graham and I have had huge support as well from all our and Rena’s friends and this has meant a great deal to both of us.

We will try to keep you posted with developments.

    Dearest Rena darling

When did any salutation from you not end in “darling”?We met twenty-five years ago in Antigua and your blithe spirit never left us. Sailing with Carlos and Norma on the “Jessica” with you – unforgetable memories. You will live forever in our hearts.
I wish we had known you were ill and in London in the last year. Go well dearest friend….
    Princess Michael (darling)

    • Rena Says:

You have been such a loyal friend to Rena over the years and she so enjoyed having your Christmas cards and the photos. Her ashes are now here in the garden she loved. I have made a little gazebo with seats either side of a plinth holding her ashes and this acts as the base for a miniature Thai spirit house – to keep her safe. How lucky we all were to have loved and been loved by such a marvellous girl.
I gather you are in Bermuda now and working on your next book. I am full of admiration for you and the work you do. We are having a garden party in memory of Rena here at the rebuilt house you will remember in English Harbour. She never saw it finished but would have loved it so much. What a treat it would be if you could join us?
With the warmest of good wishes,
      David Cadogan

  5. Rae Benbow Says:

I only heard on Monday that Rena has died. Oh, how hard it is…..

Standing, solitary, determined and a little bit nervous in a rainswept street in London, Rena was saying goodbye. She was dressed in an entirely inapproppriate red woollen cape with a hood, and her shoes (once mine) were less than waterproof.

It’s still my clearest and most cherished picture of her. She was sailing within the next few days. And when she went – the lights went out.

The years before has been a wonderful tangle of laughter, adventure and endless enthusiasm and optimism. She became the admired nursing sister of the kidney unit at Paddington Hospital, she sold chocolates (we had a great time with those) cleaned houses – and we laughed. But she needed more – so she sailed away……….

A request for secondhand sewing machines that could handle canvas came out of the blue, and for many months I sought them out, and on instructions took them to Southampton to wait for an Antigua-bound skipper. Sometimes a skipper would give me news of her, and several times she was there herself – bright, colourful and exotic. She harangued me for wearing dull clothes and left again (Graham was holding the fort and she was needed back there)
Graham came to see us once, when Rena and I had borrowed a cottage in remote Wales. How he found us I will never know. but it was a great evening – we dined on mushrooms from the field outside (and wine, of course) and he drove back to Gosport. I did not see him again until I was in Antigua for a spirit-lifting visit – it was the year Britannia came to Antigua.
    That was good.

In the years since, I saw Rena only on her trips to the UK. Always dazzling and generous and concerned – her success suited her – as did the champagne which followed her everywhere.
DAARLING – let’s have another little drink! I loved it.
I’m proud that she often said ‘people think we’re sisters!’
She brought David to meet us here in the beautiful Welsh Marches. She was softer, more reflective, and she was happy – for herself and for me that we had at last both found tranquility and very much love. When they left, my David said ‘She’s great – she really does light up a room’

    Dear David and Graham,

Sorry I´ve been so long getting in touch, just back home to my computer. I was so upset to hear that Rena has left this world, and what a void there will be without her. I´m sure the past couple of months have been incredibly difficult for you both. I just want you to know what a wonderful job you have done looking after Rena and you are both very much in our thoughts.

We will all miss her hugely. The kids all send you lots of hugs too.

    Lots of love

    Linda

  7. Kirsty Says:

    Dear Graham and David,
Leafing through these many tributes, memories and beautiful greetings to Rena must be in some small way very comforting, but in no way can make up for the huge whole that Rena will leave in all of our lives. She was a legend. She touched everyone’s lives in one way or another – mine and Alan’s included. Perhaps they are even now having an animated talk over some issue or other over a glass of champagne in that great heaven somewhere! May you find peace and joy in your future and my every good wish is with you both at this very sad time.

    With Love

Love to you both….and if there is ANYTHING at all please know I am now there for you….

I had heard that Rena was a Nurse, and when I got “boomed”: still on the dock!! Me the only non-Italian on Windrift. I insisted on being taken to Rena and not Holberton Hospital.

Our very rewarding friendship began as she put five stitches in my scalp, told me to go home, have a drink of rum and lie down for a few hours.

It worked, I was out racing the next day.

I will never ever forget her.

    Great Lady. Great human being.

  21. Ina and Downie Muir Says:

Sadly it is another Saturday without our Darling Rena!!!….here is a poem I dearly love thinking of a Grand Lady who touched so many people!!!

    ————–000000————–

When SOMEBODY DIES, a CLOUD turns into an ANGEL and flies up to tell God to put another FLOWER on a pillow.
A bird gives the message back to the world and SINGS a silent PRAYER that makes
the RAIN cry. People disappear, but they never really go away.
The SPIRITS up there put the SUN TO BED WAKE up the grass, and spin the Earth in Dizzy circles. Sometimes you can see them DANCING in a cloud during the daytime when they’re supposed to be SLEEPING. They PAINT THE RAINBOWS and also the SUNSETS and make waves SPLASH and tug at the tide. They toss shooting STARS and listen to WISHES!!! and when they SING wind songs they whisper to US
” Don’t MISS me too much. The VIEW is nice, and I’m doing just FINE!!!!
I SHALL SING U TOOOOO ME MY LOVELY RENA , dance and run along the clouds knowing we all loved u dearly and how sooo very special to ME…oxoxoxo

  22. John Clark Says:

Those who knew you will miss you, those who didn’t know you have unfortunately missed out.

    RIP Darrllliig

  23. Gary Wright Says:

  24. Lucy Munger Says:

We meet so many good people in this industry, that when one person stands out, quite as much as Rena has for so many, I feel quietly honoured to have been part of her huge life. Rena, you were a corker, and one that will never be replaced.
    RIP.

We are born to die, and when it’s our turn we have to pass over. I wish and hope that time will be kind to you both and help make that unbearable pain and feeling of emptiness diminsh quickly. 28. Lisa Nicholson Says:

Dear David, Kaari, Graham, Eggie and all those who have been there to do what they could to ease Rena’s journey – -

I’ve been thinking of you so much – and of Rena of course – as you’ve all been going through the sad difficult days of the past few weeks from where I have been in the beautiful green hills of Connecticut and the foggy loveliness of the Maine coast, both so far from the sunny shores of Antigua where you are.

Rena has touched the lives of so many many people during her time in Antigua, and in that way her unique spirit will live on even though her poor ravaged body has now died. Being closely with a person who is going through the passage of death is an intensely draining but awesome priviledge, at least that is what I found after being with Desmond during the ebbing of his life. In the end, one can only be grateful that the brave spirit who has endured the suffering is finally released from the failing physical body.

Rena had a remarkable resilience, confidence and ability to nurture her own beauty as she met the challenges of life. Bravo Rena, you were an example for us all! Now I hope you and Desmond can “raise a glass” together as you reminisce about the life and times of English Harbour over the years. Thank you for your presence among us, and Bon Voyage…
    Love, Lisa

  29. Klare McNeil Says:

I remember being called into the Sail Locker in English Harbour ‘Klare…come come’ …. frequently in the years I lived in Antigua. And I would tremble a bit. Did I commit some Antiguan ex-pat faux pas and would have a talking to or did Rena have a new romantic prospect for me to examine? No matter what in retrospect she was someone who cared deeply about her community and the people in her orb. I am sorry I did not see her when I last visited the Island – but I remember the clemetis climbing the wall of her business and thinking that is so Rena. Miss you not in the world anymore…make room for the rest of us up there please..

  30. Rena was the first person I met when we got to Antigua on Southern Star in 1982. Fincham’s Follies was being held in the Sail loft that year and Rena was our ‘Hostess with the Mostest’. A dear and kind friend for so many years always with strong advice Rena was a force of epic proportions. Look out Heaven – here comes a whole heap of trouble!!!!!

    Love always

  31. Rags Weldon Says:

Hello Rena,Graham & David- a trio of trouble! – The dolphin we saw a few days ago appeared last evening – balmy, starry and wonderful was the night. She lollopped around – her breath was audible and soothing in a funny kind of a way. I thought of you all- How are you? I am normally full of clever retort but the suddenness of all this has left me silent and frightened aswell as alerted how precious life -love health & friendship is or should I said are?
Rena you have left a wonderful stamp on my life for which I am forever greatful – I am busting to see you when we return- stay strong my South African Mamma- If I could give you something healthy of mine – to help heal you – I will All my love Hxx

  33. Quentin Says:

    Good bye Rena Darling,

The world will not be as good without you, I hope a statue is erected of you in English Harbour so in years to come people will be able to see the person behind the legend.

I will never forget the memories.

  34. Maureen & Joe Horvath Says:

A poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson seems very appropriate after the sad news of Rena’s passing:

    Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound or foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
    Turns again home.

    Twighlight and evening bell,
    And after-that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell
    When I embark.

For though from out our bourne of time and place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar

  35. Peter Mullins Says:

I CAN SAIL WITHOUT WIND, I CAN ROW WITHOUT OARS, BUT I CANNOT PART FROM MY FRIEND WITHOUT TEARS. Fair winds Rena darling,

  41. Suzie Fawcett Says:

    Dear Rena,

It was almost 11 years ago when I first met you in the Dockyard — I did my best to shimmy under the bar (as I was told was necessary if I was to succeed in gaining employment) and although my cv contained some spelling mistakes, you promised to help me.

I will never forget walking out of your office and thinking wow — I’ve just met an amazingly beautiful, special, strong woman . This still stands true today, nobody has ever made a first impression as you did to me that day. But then again you changed my life.

I remember telling you that I just needed to get a job so that I could buy a ticket back to Australia and go home to the ‘real world’ — you told me ‘darling you will never go back to the real world’ … so right you were … life is still fantastic and all of the adventures and some of my best yachting moments are because of you.

I was surprised and delighted to read your blog and to see that we share the same birthday .. this makes me very happy. I am sad to hear that you were so ill on your birthday, but I can assure you that I had a fantastic birthday — on my 39th birthday I got engaged (finally) and have never been happier.

Sending you best wishes and kind thoughts and hope that you are comfortable and surrounded by love.

    Big Big kiss

Dearest Rina, we are in Newport Rhode Island for a few weeks and had a great weekend out on Timoneer with Phil and Anne Wade, and a whole host of other marvelous people labelled in the bucket blurb as “long in the tooth veterans”!!!(how does that come around so quickly!)The weather was glorious for the Newport Bucket and Timoneer won 1st on the first day, with owner aboard-so everyone was happy! It was great to hear from Phil that this blog had been set up.It is a beautiful thing to see just how many friends from around the world care deeply for you and send their love and support during this very difficult time. You hold a special place in the hearts of all who know you with your glittering, glamorous, and enormously stong & kind personality-there is no-one like Rena.We only wish we could all be so strong and dignified in times such as this.During my yoga practice yesterday, you were in my thoughts and mind as I went through the practice. All the heat and lifeforce that I gained from the asanas felt like a huge contained ball of positive energy. At the end of the practice, during meditation,I tried strongly to send this lifeforce to you.I hope that you felt it and had comfort, and peace inside.
We come back to Antigua on August 2nd, and as always if there is anything we can bring from the USA, please let us know.Just bear in mind that we are not coming with a megayacht this time so a bag of “dirt” may not be possible this time!
    With love always,
    your friends,
    Susan & Bear

  44. KATHY & BOB LOWERY Says:

    Dear Rena & David
Just to let you know we are both thinking of you and remembering the happy times we have spent with you in Antigua. Rena you are not just ‘Queen of English Harbour’ but Queen of all Antigua and of our hearts.

You are in our prayers. Lots of love & hugs

    Bob & Kathy

  45. Simon Johnson Says:

Bare-footed, rushing between lining up at the ever- slow Swiss American bank queue (with occasional tuts and hissing), and trying to get my laundry back from Mrs Baltimore whilst explaining to her that donkey hoof-prints in the middle of my table cloth WEREN’T there when I gave my washing to her, I popped my head around your door “please, Rena, I haven’t time to interview for a chef for this season. Choose one for me. Tell her to start right away.”

The Show had started once again. A quick spruce up. Some moisteriser on my hands lest the brokers feel that they were being handshook by a humpback, squeezing my splayed feet into my odd-sized sailing shoes that I had scrummmaged from your charity box, and I rushed up on deck to my first broker.

“Tea with cucumber sandwiches? Delighted!” The tour of my schooner started, and the memories of building her flooded back – the matching of the grains and choosing American White Oak against other varieties – all of which evaporated with the ever simple Nicholson Broker question “how many does she sleep??”

I was interrupted at phase 6 part iv) of my tour by the said ‘broker’ who announced that she was Sandy, sent my Rena as my new chef, and wasn’t a broker at all!

I snatched the cucumber sandwich off her (halfway to her mouth), popped it back on the plate, and bundled her below to get dressed in an undersized ill-fitting assortment of charity uniform. A few bruises later (from pushing her downstairs I presume), and an inperceptible gasp at the tightness of her clothes, our glorious Sandy made her debut in the Caribbean charter chef market…

Thank you Rena for the Charity Shop, your reliable intuition, your perpetual encouragement, and our Sandy

  46. Martha Says:

RENA DARLING.. i am flying back to Antigua today after nearly 2 weeks away and long to see you as soon as possible…Thanks David dear.. and Graham for keeping so many of us all over the world in touch with rena via this blog! She is so loved by so many and we are all with her in spirit. I am thankful for the small things you are doing to keep her comfortable.. the candle light for peaceful sleep.. and the daily loving care…and so happy her dear niece has arrived from New Zeland… lots of love and positive thoughts and tony and I will see you very soon… martha and tony

  47. Verity Says:

    Dearest Rena

I’m so sorry to hear of your illness. Sandy has keep me posted and this blog is a wonderful way to keep all the people whom you’ve touched and influenced in the year’s gone by up to date with your battle.

I’ve so much health info on cancer. Drink plenty of fresh juices especially orange and grapefruit – just think ‘Bay Breeze’ cocktails without the vodka! Load up on powerful antioxidants vit C (try to get a high intravenous boost), E, selenium, green tea, grapeseed and/or pine bark extracts. Try immune boosters such as echinacea, maitake, lapacho or cat’s claw. Milk thistle is too is beneficial for the liver esp when chemo is undergone. Reishi mushrooms are other good things to help combat cancer.

    Some interesting links:
http://www.changessimply.com – Bernadette Bohan has had cancer and fought back. She has now written 2 books on her recovery which involves much focus on diet, juicing, filtered water and chemical avoidance.
http://www.drclarke.net – Hulda Clarke has written a couple of books including a ‘A Cure for All Diseases’and A Cure for All Cancers.’
http://www.judycole.co.uk and http://www.thebodytalks.co.uk – Judy Cole is a fan of some of Dr Clarke’s thinking. Some more interesting stuff here.
http://www.parkattwood.org – offer mistletoe therapy, good for combatting cancer.

I could rabbit on about this alternatives which I hope will be of interest and help. I wanted you to know that you have been in my thoughts. I have found it difficult to write as I feel guilty for not seeing you when we were over in March, and also so helpless on this side of the pond. It is great comfort to know that you are in such good hands.

I can’t recall how many times that you have giving me a right telling off in the past for naughty behaviour!! I did take on board all your comments and guidance and tried to tow the line however the naughtiness hasn’t quite gone away!

You’re a tough cookie and I know that you can fight this. Dig deep and draw on those reserves. Above all, a positive mental attitude is half the battle so remember, that cup is half full and hopefully it will be brimming with champagne again very soon.

    Love and best wishes
    Verity xxx

  48. Simon Johnson Says:

    My Darling Rena,

Every day I wake thinking about you, and during the course of the day I re-play in my mind the many conversations we have over the 19 years that I have known you. Whilst I was living in Antigua, it was never longer than a day between them. Abroad it has never been longer than a week. The world has been rectified. The moon has been put where it is. It has been decided that the sun does a good job afterall….

My heaven is dotted with the stars of your guidance; bathing my path with the soft glow of your love and care.

    What a privilege!

    Love Simon.

  49. Kevin Paul Says:

My Dear Rena, I notice others have referred to the ceremonial “stepping over of the bar”, I wonder how many of them suffered inpromptu haircuts while trying to get back over that bar.
Your great strength seemed always to be weeding out the ones whose hearts weren’t really into the hard work required in this industry. I am forever grateful for the faith you showed in me, I wouldn’t have stood a chance without you continually nagging me to “keep my nose clean”.
I am stuck in Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas, trying to get back to Europe before Keffi has our baby in September. If at all possible I will stop in Antigua to try to get you back on the champagne, if not I have some superb Kiwi Sauvignon Blancs to try you on.
Thank you for everything Rena, your tireless work for others, and your appetite for life have been a lesson for so many.
All my Love, Kevin(aka Marsh Vegas)

  50. Simon Johnson Says:

I was rushing between my ritual of serving you daily high tea in your office, whilst showing the brokers around my good old schooner at the charter show, when I had some additional (and rather urgent) news for you that day. There was a sound of water pouring into the boat! What can I do?? I hurredly explained to the (endearingly wonderful, but slightly gullible American) brokers that this may be an effective way to keep the bilges smelling sweet as they cooed over my Royal Doulton collection and damask linens, whilst you were on the phone rallying some divers to patch up the hull before I sank any further. Fortunately I was close to your office where it was a little more shallow, and I settled on the bottom (with periodic bumps) to see the show out. I instructed the divers to stay hidden if they saw any brokers walk the pasarelle. With your further effective and very persuasive screeching (with an accent that more ‘hurtles’ the words out as a fast cricketer might deliver a lethal ball), you made space on the slipway for my boat to be hauled, and I rushed over there before I sank any further. Further persuasive assistance got me the most rapid overnight patch-weld you have ever seen, and I made my timely Christmas charter pick-up. The patch survived 8 years on… My friendship and love for you forever…

  51. Fred Acke Says:

Dear Rena, just been reading all the latest on this e mail thing you have and remembering all the names of the people who have written in, as ‘Pratty points out so many of us have you to thank for where we are today, your not so subtle guidance for us wayward ‘rascals’ who focused more on hot chicks than careers! It was 19 years ago when I first skipped over the steel bar in your office for the first time and you pulled my ear ring out, gave me a bollocking and explained what a CV was.Now as I stand here on the bridge of Athena I think of all the years between then and now and smile when I think of everytime I come and see you, seeing the photo board and having a good belly laugh with you and Graham, I guess I just want to say thanks for all the support you have given me, youve been a datum point in my life and I have enjoyed our friendship more than I can say, long may it last.

    Love Fred

  52. David Evans and Fiona McCarthy Says:

    Darling Rena,

So sorry to hear of your aversion to Champagne recently – I hope that corrects itself in a timely manner. Fiona and I are chilling (literally) up here in Maine but will be down to see you in November.
Looking forward to seeing you when we get in, all our best
    Dave and Fi xxx

  53. Moira (Mickey) Hepenstall Says:

    Hi there Rena,

I received your news and blogsite from Lorna. You know perfectly well that I’m distressed at hearing about your illness. But I also know that you’re a rock (one of those BIG BIG ones that can’t be pushed around). I know – to quote Bob Marley – that “when the winds of change come you have strong foundations”. I wish you many happy hours yet to come, to lighten the darker hours that will engulf you from time to time before the next brilliant dawn arrives.
You are obviously surrounded by loving friends, and your David, who is, I must say, a wonderful watercolour artist. The fact that you are condsired the Queen doesn’t surprise me one little bit. You’re the Rena I remember from PGH.

Last week Maureen Johnson and I met (with our hubbies) in Austria. Our thoughts were with you. I wanted to include a photo of the two of us, but am a goof and don’t know how to. Forgive.

Bless you Rena. Wish I could be there to hold your hand if you needed it.

    Love xxxx
    Mickey

  57. David & Rena – it’s sunny in England for once, and we’ve just been sitting out on the terrace talking about happy times at Peter’s Birthday, and in Shaftesbury when we were painting Mother’s house; we feel completely helpless over here, but it’s reassuring to catch up with news on the blog; you have the most amazing friends out there, supporting you, delivering food & drink almost hourly it would seem…..keeping spirits up! Keep fighting Rena, we’re praying for you…..with all our love, Ann & Chris, James & Richard xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Rena; you darling creature, I will never forget how you took me under your wing in antigua and really changed the course of my life, and I know that i’m only one of hundreds of people all over the world that you did the same for! I’m sure you have no idea how often so many people think of you with love, and we’re all in awe of your beauty and strength.
    lots of love
    hannah (ex mamamouchi)

  61. Simon Johnson Says:

I have to be honest here my Darling Rena, my love for you is too strong and the helplessness too intense that it feels like glass shards are scraping my heart in anguish. If by some miracle I could take all your venemous cells out of you into me, so that you would be free I would…. love you hugely….from far too far away…in Croatia…imprisoned it seems…separated from my heart. Thank you to the love that both Graham and David show you daily….

  62. Tessa and Phillip Says:

    Hi sweetheart
Just want you to know we love you very much. You are such an important part of Antigua, “Queen” is certainly your deserved title. We are on island on the 16th July and look forward to giving you a big hug and telling you how very much we treasure you and all the happy memories you have been instrumental in creating for us.You are one in a million darling and we are blessed to have you in our lives.
    Love you,

  63. Hilary de Kok Says:

    Hi Rena

I don’t know how to respond to the most recent update on your blog, which I have just read. I can hear your voice so clearly saying “It’s just crap really”. And it is. Think of all the patients you have aided (from your open office on Nelson’s Dockyard, where indelicate conditions were inspected, much to my amazement!) and saved (stitching up head wounds), and how is it you have not built up credit to live forever?
You remain a beacon of glamour & beauty (with a counterbalance of down-to-earth practicality & straightforwardness), uninhibited gusto & energy, independence & strength (with a contradictory enthusiasm for the next wedding). You have tried your best to teach me not to care what the world thinks, but to live to the fullest. I’ve been a poor student, but thank you for that!
I’ll be over at a moment’s notice if you say the word – but it also sounds like you are surrounded by plenty of love and support. David, thank you for everything.

    Love and kisses
    Hilary

  64. Billy & Kate Says:

Hi Rena,Sorry to hear of your Hickup, but also hear your fighting back. Well what more would we expect, as usual kick some ASS! Thoughts, love, and hugs to you Rena, Gragham and David.

    Kate & Billy xx

  65. Michael and Shonnie Says:

    Dear Rena,
We can’t imagine anyone being surrounded my more love and devotion than you are.
We are returning from London on Sunday, July 5 and are wondering if we can bring you anything?
    Lots of Love,
    Michael and Shonnie

  66. RICHARD Says:

Dearest Rena, as you know I love to go running every morning & today I was meandering along the Mountain foothills of Formentor @ 6am & going over all my various worries : How do I negotiate my next pay increase with the Bank rate at 0 per cent, Should I try & sleep with the Polish Stewardess etc. And then as the sun rose over the rocky ridge I thought, YOU LITTLE SELFISH SHIT ( south african accent ) I then spent the next 5 km composing this heartfelt song for you.
To be sung by David & Graham in boxer shorts at your bedside on the verandah:
” YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE, MY SPECIAL SUNSHINE,YOU MAKE ME HAPPY WHEN SKIES ARE GREY– BUT MOST OF ALL RENA I SIMPLY LOVE YOU, AND CANT WAIT TO SEE YOU, IN A COUPLE OF DAYS !!!! ”
Linda & the kids would love to come with me, but they are at Tennis camp & Lindas making Jam. Okay its a lie,I cant afford their airfares & pay the Brazilian Pool cleaner, who Linda insists on having whilst I am working my balls off teaching the new stewardess how to make beds.
See you on Wednesday with all my love.
P.S. Should I drink the Cristal with the Virgin Girls?

  67. John C-S. Says:

    Hi Darling…
Did you receive my smutty postcards? If I’d known you were off colour I’d have toned them down a bit. Oh well it’s done now. I’m not going to recommend you see Dr. Arthur like you did to me in ’74; I found out the ‘F’ at the end of his medical certificate stood for ‘Failed’ besides he’d be about 110 by now. It looks like you’re in excellent hands. It’s the love that will make you better not just the medicin. So here’s some more from Me, Imogen and Jolyon xxx

John also gave me the (late for me) sad news about our dear old “friend” Carlos Perdomo – how can I contact Norma?

My travels haven’t taken me to Antigua for a couple of years and I very much miss our short but sweet chats. I promise to come over and catch up this next Antigua Charter Show.

I wish you a very Happy Birthday, I’ve been very worried about you but I know you are far too tough to let a little thing like this keep you down for long, so I expect to see you fighting fit and ready for our usual few rounds of light sparring in your office come December, as usual I will probably lose…
    Big hug & kisses

    Love
